Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham
Incredibly as it may seem, President Obama has sent two Republican senators, namely John McCain, R-AZ and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. as his "emissaries" to Egypt to bring "calm" to the country while simultaneously issuing an ultimatum to Egypt's military coup leaders; "move toward democracy" or the U.S. "cuts off aid".
Focusing on McCain, the flagship Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, citing an unnamed top government official, accused McCain with "falsifying the facts" and said his "foolish statements are unacceptable".
Some background is in order. The Obama administrations current "Egyptian problem" arose when it found itself in a bind regarding U.S. military aid to Egypt's military. Calling the military's overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi on July3 a "coup", it would by law have to automatically suspend the $1.5 billion in military aid the U.S. sends to Egypt each year.
The administration initially supported Morsi even after the "coup", then reversed itself after it became evident the military overthrow had succeeded and installed itself as the new "interim" government ruling Egypt.
Meanwhile the last five weeks of "interim" rule has brought two military massacres of Islamic supporters of Morsi protesting his ouster and wanting him reinstated as the legitimately elected president of Egypt.
The standoff between Morsi's Islamist backers along with members of the Muslim Brotherhood against the military led "interim" government continues with sit-ins led by the Brotherhood which they say is non-violent and peaceful while the "interim" government describes them as an incitement for political violence.
So into this breech of Egyptian turmoil and chaotic political instability Obama sends in McCain and Graham, two bombastic cold war warriors that never saw a war they didn't like, stalwarts of democracy not and they're supposed to "calm" the current situation. Please.
When last heard from, McCain was becoming apoplectic over Russia granting asylum to Edward Snowden, calling for the Obama administration to send in more missile batteries into Europe plus asking for a renewed push to expand NATO into Georgia.
