Kim Jong Il and his successor Kim Jong Un

Here we go again. North Korea's newest leader Kim Jong Un has been making "threatening" comments this past month about sending missiles that could hit Guam, Hawaii, even the U.S. mainland and the U.S. and its Asian allies South Korea and Japan have reacted with predictable alarm.

The latest has the North Korean's about to test a missile, the "Musudan" that has a range of 1,550 to 2,500 miles, enough to reach Guam. Of course what's missing in all this bluster from North Korea and the usual U.S. reaction is North Korea, like the U.S. Israel, China, Russia et al have the legal right to test its missiles.

Un, like his predecessors is all bluster. And being new to the job as North Korea's "Dear Leader", he needs to show his generals his tough guy demeanor. Again it's all show and bravado.

Meanwhile Admiral Samuel Locklear, the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific went before Congress on Tuesday to reassure the U.S. military could intercept any North Korean missile aimed at U.S. territory or any of America's Asian allies.

But let's be clear; the idea that North Korea would preemptively launch a nuclear weapon aimed at the U.S., its territory or any of its Asian allies knowing it would be incinerated in retaliation makes the idea absurd.

As I've written on numerous occasions, Stalin, Mao and all subsequent leaders of the USSR and China, (some of the most paranoid and horrific leaders in history) were all deterred by what came to be known as MAD, mutually assured destruction.

MAD still applies to North Korea as it would for a nuclear Iran.

Meanwhile the whole idea of terrorists acquiring a nuclear weapon, flying it and dropping it on U.S. territory is just fear driven propaganda spouted by U.S. officials.

Even terrorists acquiring and igniting a nuclear device on the U.S. mainland is the stuff of Hollywood. Such a weapon would require a nuclear sophistication that no terrorists have shown to possess.
