The backbone of American journalism was once regarded as liberal, intelligent, and objective with respect to factual reporting. Many people of good conscience still count on these mainstream sources for their information about world events. The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR and CNN remain the most trusted news sources in America.
Precisely because they are trusted, control of these news outlets has been eagerly pursued by commercial and political interests with great wealth and power. They assure that some questions never get asked, and some news never gets reported. "In any polarized debate, the most important thing is what neither side is saying but both sides unconsciously agree on." [Charles Eisenstein]
The CIA has boasted of its own paid agents on staff at all the major news outlets. Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post, while his Amazon has major CIA contracts. Most people know the Sulzberger family as owners of the New York Times, but the largest single stockholder is a little-known Mexican telecom billionaire.
The good news is that there are many alternative sources available for those who wish to read a broader range of perspectives and, more important, take a look at some of the facts that aren't reported anywhere in the mainstream. The catch is that none of these is infallible, and most have biases of their own. In the end, there is no substitute for individual judgment, thinking and evaluating all that we read. The process begins when we broaden our news feed beyond our comfort zone.
The list below is selected for reporting facts and perspectives you are unlikely to find in the mainstream of American journalism and which, in our judgment, are largely reliable and intellectually coherent.
