Nothing of consequence ever gets done in this country.
To wit: Name a national problem and issue in contemporary America where a real solution has been carried out?
Let's take a look at three unrelated issues; health care, gun control and the environment.
The exorbitant cost of health care in America has not been brought down with the Affordable Care Act-Obama care-the primary reason for reform in the first place.
Real reform of health care, a single payer, Medicare type system for all-which would have provided a competitive alternative to the costly private corporate controlled system with its high administrative overhead costs-was never on the table to begin with. That's because the health care system is completely controlled by the private health care behemoths. And guess what"the Congressional committee that was the chief overseer of the health care debate, when it first met refused to seat the advocates of a single payer system who were actually tossed out of the committee hearing room when they protested not be allowed to participate on the health care panel discussion and debate before the Senate Finance Committee in 2010.
Could it be the chairman of the committee was none other than former Senator Max Baucus, D. Montana, a primary beneficiary of the private health care industry largesse that underwrote his re-election effort?
Then we heard all the baloney from the tea party crazies condemning Obama Care but this cacophony is nothing but a mindless distraction while the true issue behind health care reform-reducing its exorbitant costs-was never considered. Meanwhile under Obama Care health care remains solely in the hands of the private health care industry monopoly which grew ever larger while health care costs continue to skyrocket well beyond inflation.
As for gun control, the NRA and its lobbyists are the primary underwriters of Congressional Republicans as well as many Democrats.
Atrocities committed by the deranged using legally purchased high powered automatic weapons from elementary schools, movie theatres to college campuses horrify the public but real gun control efforts never come to fruition after the initial furor dies down demanding something be done.
No other industrialized country in the world permits its citizens to buy and carry such weapons, much less ordinary hand guns.
It's an insane misreading of the 2 nd Amendment, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" that's used to justify Americans arming themselves to the teeth. Maybe in 1789 when there was no standing army and unless war came about where a state militia had to be formed and the men needed to provide their own muskets because they weren't provided by the government this Amendment made sense. Yet it's been so misconstrued there are now some 300 million firearms in this country where some individual crazies increasingly commit carnage against innocents-but don't hold your breath any real reform will be enacted.
As to the environment, global warming and the coming catastrophe from man-made causes confirmed by research scientists everywhere, the US as the largest polluter burning fossil fuels-China may be close or possibly surpassed the US as the #1 polluter-has at least been acknowledged by Obama yet global warming deniers proliferate in the Congress. In reality little has been done to enact serious environmental regulations reducing carbon emissions and fully embracing wind and solar energy solutions. Thank the major oil, natural gas, fracking interests plus the coal industries and their lobbyists as the primary global warming deniers.
How about the issue of a $trillion in college student loan debt sending many into a lifetime of debt peonage or enacting or re-enacting regulation of the financial industry-Glass Steagell, the 1933 legislation separating commercial banks from investment banks-to prevent a reoccurrence of the 2008 financial meltdown, the $trillion dollar bailout of the banks and subsequent economic great recession, the outsourcing of jobs and continued decimation of domestic manufacturing, rebuilding the crumbling public infrastructure of roads, bridges and upgrading and expanding an antiquated rail network where high speed modern bullet trains could traverse the nation between major cities. How about cutting the bloated trillion dollar defense budget which could pay for real solutions of the multitude of issues and problems we face not just those mentioned here.
