When the shaman showed up
I was waiting.
(This is the same shaman who did a soul retrieval for me
30 years ago.)
She is Native American
(and American).
I am just American;
One good reason why I need this so bad.
I need to be more like I was before
I was traumatized by my impossible life.
To prepare she asked me to ask for a dream
Three nights before the retrieval.
Here is the dream I had:
I am standing in the backyard
Of my childhood home.
I am facing the butternut tree
That grew by the horse barn.
My father made a swing from a board
That was long enough for me and my brother and sister to sit on.
By mother would push is
Under the butternut.
The swing isn't in my dream
But my feelings for the tree are strong.
Next to the tree in my dream
Is a rusty iron silo, a cylinder.
The cylinder is as wide around
As the butternut.
I don't know why it is there
Or what is inside it.
All of my attention is on the tree
To which I feel powerfully connected.
In the dream I wonder how old it is
For it was old when I was little.
I woke thinking
It must date back to 1951.
1951 was
The year I was born.
After I shared my dream I lay down under a cover
With my eyes closed.
I heard the shaman whistle
And rattle.
The whistle sounded close
And sometimes far away.
After a while I heard her blowing into my chest
And solar plexus.
I felt her fingers stitching me up
And I knew she had done an extraction*.
She also blew into my crown
And I felt her fingers close the opening.
When she was done I lay there quietly,
Then opened my eyes and sat up.
She asked me how I was feeling
And I told her.
I said I feel lighter now,
And I asked her what she did.
She said she got rid of the rusty silo
Along with its contents.
She said I have more
Space in me now.
She said I have an opportunity to fill
That space with joy.
She said that I do not have to
Feel responsible for the world anymore.
During our session
My eyes kept pooling with water.
It was as if there was a spring
Rising into my eyes.
I was not crying
But my eyes were overflowing.
When I left I felt lighter
And grateful.
It is several weeks later
And I still do.

* When a shaman performs an Extraction he or she is ritually extracting an intrusive energy or spirit that does not belong inside her client's energy field. How the intrusive entity or "object" manifested may or may not be discovered. If it is important for the client to know how it got there, the shaman will take that on in a journey and find out. Otherwise the extraction is literally just that, an energetic extraction. It is the shaman's responsibility to cast the entity or object somewhere from whence it will never return.
The butternut tree where we swung as little children was / is my birth-tree. The rusty silo was already there when I was born. I probably inherited it. It has been with me, standing next to the sacred butternut for 73 years. The shaman got rid of it. Since my soul-retrieval I have let more joy into my life. My son noticed. I have had three soul-retrievals in my life. All of them have been life-changing. When you have a soul-retrieval it changes you for the better, therefore the world also changes a little for the better, but that is not the point.
