The thrust of Darwin's "theory" has to do with the concept of change/adapt/evolve or die. Historically, political the Left promotes change, while the Right wants to maintain the status quo -- or even regress.

Here -- in no particular order -- are the factors which I perceive brought us Drumpf:
1. Bill Clinton opened the doors of the Democratic Party to the wealthy and their Attack Dog corporations. This party, which had historically been the political party that represented the poor, people of color, unions, elderly, disadvantaged, etc., began the slow transformation into a closeted branch of the greedy Republican Party.
2. The three most damaging legislative actions which Bill Clinton signed were -- NAFTA, The Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the Gramm--Leach--Bliley Act. NAFTA created enormous financial incentive for the American corporations to relocate in other countries in search of cheaper labor cost, thus costing millions of job losses in the US. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed a reasonable and previously healthy competitive media environment (TV, radio, print, Internet) to be radically consolidated to the point where today we have, for example, just six corporations, whereas in 1983 there were over fifty. The Gramm--Leach--Bliley Act rescinded the Glass-Steagall Act, which protected us from banks speculating with our savings and thereby contributed to the near system-wide international financial crash of 2007.
3. By the time that Hillary decided to run for the Presidency, all of the above factors were bearing down on the public. Additionally, they found themselves with depleted pension/retirement funds, their kids up to their eyebrows in student debt, ongoing undeclared wars, rising across the board prices with flat income levels, escalating medical costs with no increase in Social Security benefits, unresolved immigration and racial divisions, a Congress with a single digit favorability rating, collapsing infrastructure, wealth disparity, non-functioning/non-responsive government(s), environmental issues, etc. What did Hillary Clinton have to offer? More of the same, with MAYBE some small incremental changes around the edges.
4. This political season -- using the highly restrictive rules of entry that were devised and maintained by the two dominant political parties -- proffered to the public four candidates for the Presidency. A corporate/politically compliant media basically ignored, and even mildly degraded, the two lesser known candidates, gave a respectable amount of consideration to Hillary but hyped the hell out of marketing expert, Drumpf. This resulted in an admittedly lopsided presentation of the available political spectrum to the voting public.
5. During the Primaries, the elite management of the Democratic Party did all they could to prevent Sanders -- with his campaign of change -- from being successful . They also were almost blatant in their corrupt tactics -- like using the media to declare Clinton the winner in the competition for the huge number of Primary delegates in California -- the day before the Primaries were to take place in that state. Additionally, the Democratic primary season flaunted the corrupt power that the Superdelegates had over the entire process. The despicable destruction of an incredibly desirable candidate's run for the Presidency fractured a large portion of the Democratic base who were craving change and saw their party intentionally dash their hopes.
What I find particularly intriguing, is the effect that the 2010 Census has had on this election. After the 2010 national Census was taken, the Republicans, after the previous mid-term elections -- held a very large majority of the local districts throughout the US. As a result, they were able to severely Gerrymander those districts in their favor and thus ensure a tremendous advantage for their party in elections AND the Electoral College -- for the next decade. So, while Hillary won the election by popular vote (at last count), she lost the majority of the Electoral College vote. The main question that I still have, is -- just who are those unelected people who have taken control of our democracy and now forced Drumpf on us ... and what can we do about it/them?
