A year ago today , Manny Pacquiao graced the cover of TIME Magazine in Asia. In a week , Pacquiao will take on http://www.filipinoboxing.com/2009/11/great-hope.html
He became the first boxer since Mike Tyson to be on the cover of TIME Magazine. Since that November 6, 2009 honor, Pacquiao has won his third Boxer of the Year Award and become the only pugilist in history to win seven titles in seven different boxing divisions. Moreover, in May 2010, he was elected to the house of representatives in the Philippine congress. "He is the first active boxer to become a congressman in the Philippines."
"Currently, Pacquiao is the WBO Welterweight World Champion (Super Champion) and is rated as the number 1 pound-for-pound best boxer in the world by several sporting news and boxing websites, including The Ring, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, NBC Sports, Yahoo! Sports and About.com." He was voted Boxer of the Decade for 2000-2009 by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).
"Outside the ring, the most well-known person in the Philippines has also made his mark. Before this next magazine spread, he made the cover of Reader's Digest Asia, prior to his December 2008 match with then-boxing's most well-known fighter, Oscar De la Hoya. His name has also been included in numerous significant lists, such as landing in the number 6 and number 22 of Forbes' Richest Athletes, and Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People, respectively."
"Along with appearing on a nationally televised talk show, . . . "Pac-Man' has become a household name in America, as well as other parts of the world, and he is standing well among other superstars who have transcended their respective sports. Certainly, the patriot Pacquiao is proud, and so should his countrymen, of the honor and recognition he is bestowing towards his mother land. Because of these things, Pacquiao has helped boxing gain a rise in popularity recently, on the heels of an economic recession."
WHAT'S THE PAC-FANATICISM ABOUT?
According to most boxing-viewers, "If he [Pacquiao] is not yet generally accepted as a star [in the USA and Asia], a win in his Novermber 14 fight with another elite fighter, Miguel Cotto, would elevate his status yet again, in and out of the ring."
More than one Filipino fan has written, "So it has been written in the history of sports it is not all about boxing but also bring peoples hope especially for us Filipinos who are ready to sacrifice ourselves for our family we've been treated like slaves in other countries but we never surrender we will strive until we succeed Paquiao can't help us financially but the honor he gave to us is priceless that money can't buy, the next generation will remember Paquiao as "Fighter with a great cause' thanx Manny you will always be our inspiration, good luck fight for the honor of our country for your people who suffer poverty you gave them importance in our community which our government failed to help. God bless win or lose, we love you...."
