I'm not sure this bit of information has received the attention it deserves.
The philosophy of ISIS, also known as ISIL or DAESH, which is an insulting term and the one I'll use for the balance of this article, (Daesh has threatened to cut the tongues out of people who use it) includes the belief that they should kill what amounts to hundreds of millions of Muslims.
There's a valuable, must read article published by the Atlantic, What Isis Really Wants. The author, Graeme Wood, says that Daesh has a "carefully considered commitment to returning civilization to a seventh-century legal environment, and ultimately to bringing about the apocalypse."
Wood informs the reader that Daesh has a very limited view of what is acceptable behavior. For Muslims, it is extremely severe. If they violate its version of Islamic law-- a seventh century version-- then they are guilty of apostasy, which means death. When a Jordanion fighter pilot was captured after bombing an area controlled by Daesh, he was burned alive, then buried in stone-- just as he rained fire on them and caused buildings to fall on them.
Daesh practices an extreme, fundamentalist version of Sunni Islam. Wikipedia reports that they are a Wahhabi/Salafi jihadistextremist militant group. They see people who do not practice that version of Islam as being apostate. So, most Sunni and all Shia Muslims are apostate. If they are apostate then they are considered deserving of death.
Muslims who engage in "modern" world practices, like becoming elected officials, or even voting, are considered apostate, thus deserving death.
Wood says in his Atlantic article,
"Following takfiri doctrine, the Islamic State is committed to purifying the world by killing vast numbers of people. The lack of objective reporting from its territory makes the true extent of the slaughter unknowable, but social-media posts from the region suggest that individual executions happen more or less continually, and mass executions every few weeks. Muslim "apostates" are the most common victims. Exempted from automatic execution, it appears, are Christians who do not resist their new government. Baghdadi permits them to live, as long as they pay a special tax, known as the jizya, and acknowledge their subjugation."
Sound like Nazi Germany? It does to me.
What do you do? I must confess, there's a part of my subconscious that blurts out "flamethrower." But, if you read Wood's article, you'll see that this is exactly what Daesh wants-- to be attacked, to be martyred.
David Swanson has some great answers on things to do. They are non-violent, aimed at taking the oxygen out of Daesh's recruiting and local support, and taking away Saudi and other funding sources.
Given that DAESH wants to be attacked, it doesn't make sense to give them what they want. It seems that the politicians and pundits who are calling for boots on the ground military action against Daesh are pretty clueless and trying to show off their tough guy chops.
And given that Daesh has made it clear that it wants to kill hundreds of millions of Muslims, how can so many be so hard hearted in rejecting all Muslims.
