This journalist composite chronicle about March 10 is very vital to me, having worked for 20 years to help obtain the release of Tibetan political prisoners. Out of what is left of a population of 4 million, after sixty years of quiet, hidden, and very vicious genocide, China has locked up tens of thousands in prisons all over Tibet, much like the Germans did to Jews at Auschwitz, Bergen Bergen, Treblinka, Dachau, etc.

Today (March 10) marks the 60th anniversary of the 1959 Tibet uprising against Chinese rule. The rebellion ultimately failed, leading to the decades-long exile of the 14th Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader.

In the six decades since he escaped to India, the Dalai Lama has evolved into an international icon of nonviolence and spiritual aspirations, traveling frequently and being hosted by political and religious leaders as well as celebrities around the world.

Here is a look at his journey from living among his people at age 23 to his status now as an 83-year-old man unable to return home.

Like so many members of her Tibetan community, Sonam Rabgay has never been home. She's never watched the world's tallest mountains cut through pillowy clouds or gazed upon a holy, turquoise-hued lake from a nearby monastery.

Still, the 24-year-old Santa Fe resident, the daughter of Tibetan refugees, has marched on March 10 each year since she could walk for the right to return to the region known as the "Roof of the World," she said.
