Islamophobia Run Amok

What is one to make of Pastor Terry Jones of the "Dove World Outreach Center", a small evangelical Christian Church in Gainesville, Florida?

Jones apparently wrote a book titled, "Islam is the Devil", so his anti Islam philosophy is known, but until now, fairly obscure. That is until he made known his latest planned gambit of setting copies of the Koran on fire "celebrating" the anniversary of 9/11.

The whole planned episode has spread like wide fire over the internet with Muslims worldwide demonstrating against his planned desecration of their holy book.

Jones' plan has elicited comments from General Petraeus saying it will "endanger his troops" as well as condemnation from other Obama administration officials.

Jones' planned bonfire of the Koran along with the recent demonstrations by Americans opposed to the planned Islamic Center to be built a couple of blocks from "ground zero" in New York City has many Muslims believing we are literally at war with Islam.

Add in our preemptive wars and occupations in Muslim countries, our resort to torture, indefinite detention, extraordinary rendition and the indiscriminate killing of innocents in drone and missile attacks, it wouldn't be illogical for even moderate Muslims (who make up a majority) to connect the dots and be anti American.

But without digressing too far, how is one to begin to describe Pastor Jones, a man whose thought process seems so warped and distorted it seems incomprehensible.

He's obviously beyond "normal" evangelical thought as many other Christian fundamentalist preachers have come out denouncing Jones and his planned book barbecue.

From this vantage point, Jones is an embarrassment, evincing the worst possible face of America save for a Dick Cheney who should have his own special place in hell (if there is such a place) mapped out all for himself.

Of course, whether we're religious or atheists, secular or sectarian, we're all sinners of a kind, none of us without fault and criticism and above reproach.

But there are some, the Hitler's and his Nazi henchmen, Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao along with the Jeffrey Dahmers' and David Berkowitz' and other human predators that do deserve a special place in human infamy.

Sadly Pastor Terry Jones must be placed among the worst of the worst. To so outwardly condemn the beliefs of a billion Muslims worldwide by his planned burning of the Koran is an unredeemable act worthy only of condemnation and scorn.

To those Americans who remain silent and acquiesce to Jones' planned act they become his enablers and good Americans not.
