Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. - Ephesians 4: 29 (ESV)

Those who know me, know that I am no defender of Megyn Kelly. I think as "journalists" go, she is an empty suit. I think she was put on the air for esthetics and whenever she has a real expert on her show she routinely has her lunch handed to her. She also portrays a very snarky arrogance that is unbecoming of journalism in general, although many do. From her infamous insistence that Santa Claus is a white man to her mocking final question at Thursday's debate about whether the candidates have heard from God. There just is not a lot of substance there. That said, I feel compelled as a Christian to come to her defense because Donald Trump repeatedly crosses the line regarding her and Christians seem almost giddy to watch it and join in.

This is what happens when we continue to mix our politics with our faith. The carnality of the political world will always override the tenets of our faith. The Bible makes very clear that friendship with the world is enmity with God. We cannot serve two masters and that verse is about anything that we allow to master us, not just money. The harsh reality is that political Christians seem to be absolutely salivating over Donald Trump's rise in the primary polls as he pursues the Oval Office and for the life of me; I just don't get it. I certainly do not get it from a political perspective but for our purposes today, I do not get it at all from a Christian perspective. Go to the pages of Charisma News and other Christian websites and you will see them overrun with absurd articles supporting Donald Trump. Os Hillman actually went as far as to say that Donald Trump speaks for God! That he was a "prophetic voice." Grand False Prophets, Kim Clement and Jeremiah Johnson have said that Trump is a trumpet for God. I've read two articles this week comparing him to King Cyrus in the Bible. And then we wonder why no one in the world takes Christians seriously anymore? Donald Trump is not only the textbook definition of narcissistic carnality I think he trademarked the term.

So there we were Thursday night and the opening question from moderator Kelly was asking about the factual statements the Donald has made in the past degrading to women. The terms included fat pigs, slobs, dogs, and disgusting animals. While he tried to pretend he said these only about Rosie O'Donnell, as if that would somehow be acceptable, the fact is that it was not just contained to O'Donnell. The "disgusting" crack was actually towards a female lawyer who needed a medical break from a deposition to pump breast milk for her three month old daughter. Apparently that offended Trump. He claimed that NY Times columnist Gail Collins had the "face of a dog." Given this history, the question was fair. A question was posed to Dr. Ben Carson about his inexperience. A question was posed to Jeb Bush about dynastic politics. I can say as someone who generally finds Fox to be absurd, they did a pretty good job moderating this debate. The questions were much tougher than I had expected. Tougher but not out of line. If someone is running for president, the fact that they have an unapologetic track record of demeaning and degrading women is certainly germane to their candidacy. It certainly should be germane to Christians, who so often discuss politics in relation to the morality of the person running.

Quite frankly, this was a political opportunity to get past this issue early on in the electoral season but the arrogance of Donald Trump would never allow that. He could have offered an apology and asserted his assurance to women that they were just as important as men. Let's just say that Mr. Trump decided to take another tact:

"Megyn, if you don't like it I'm sorry. I've been nice to you. Although I could probably maybe not be based on the way you have treated me. But I wouldn't do that"

So when faced with a legitimate question about things he admits to have said, Trump's response is to threaten the woman asking the question. In a live televised debate. For the office of President of the United States. As for that "I wouldn't do that" caveat? It did not last through the night:

"Fox viewers give low marks to bimbo @MegynKelly will consider other programs!"

This is a tweet sent out by Trump at 3:20 AM, following the debate. So when confronted with your sexist and wildly inappropriate comments about women, you think the presidential thing to do is call your opponent a bimbo. On social media. The complete and total self-immolation however was far from over:

"Well, I just don't respect her as a journalist. I don't think she's very good. I think she's highly overrated" She starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions, and you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever. She was, in my opinion, she was off-base."

This was during an interview with CNN the next day. There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying she was off base. There is even nothing wrong with saying you do not respect her as a journalist. The problem is when you start discussing her menstruation cycles as the reason for her line of questioning. To imply there was something hormonal about her decision to ask you a completely legitimate question. In a debate. For the office of President of the United States.

It takes a lot for me to defend Megyn Kelly but no one deserves this disgusting ad hominem attack. I might have issues with her in relation to her job but not her as a person. Or as a woman. The more disturbing thing to me though is as a Christian. People like Os Hillman, Kim Clement, and Jeremiah Johnson are only the tip of the carnal Christianity iceberg. They are now on record as saying that Donald Trump speaks for God directly. This despite the sewerage that keeps spewing out from his mouth. This despite when asked about faith recently, Trump said that while he believes in God he has never sought forgiveness for his sins. That is not surprising when your reaction to a woman asking you why you call women horrible names is to call her a bimbo and ask of she is on her period. Have I mentioned that this is all in context of running for President? This is who you think should run this country? Seriously? You think he is sounding a trumpet? A prophetic voice? Speaking for God? Yikes. I am not saying you can't vote for him but do not think for a second it has anything to do with God. Our key verse makes that abundantly clear. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths. Impart grace. Build up, do not tear down. Christians everywhere should be uniting in their defense of Megyn Kelly not feeding their carnality by standing with a man who has no shame and no place in a serious dialogue about the future of this country.

Megyn, I may disagree with you on a lot politically and journalistically but today, I stand with you. I stand with @megynkelly.

Rev. Anthony
