" Pretty soon Sherburn sort of  laughed,

not the pleasant kind but the kind that makes you feel

-           You   had not   aged a bit , Colonel since we talked for the first time in the Y2005.

-             I saved our discussion

You   are still the same- a proud Southern aristocrat, talking to the lynching   mob with a rifle in your hand. I though had aged considerably.   Misery   withers us,   Colonel; we are in deep trouble even more than before. We thought   the imbecile in power   was the   worst we could get but   now we have   a droner. This one kills from afar and     then talks about peace. If     he   was in charge   in   your time, Colonel, he would   not have rushed   with the mob; he would have put you on the list and   quietly   shot you in the back. Or he would have sent a drone to destroy your house and kill all in it; so effective we had become, Colonel. Oh, BTW, he is   African- American. Turned out that we are the same after all; malice and cowardice do not discriminate.

"The idea of you lynching anybody! It's amusing.   The idea of    you   thinking that you had pluck enough to lynch a man!. .Why, a man's safe   in the hands of    ten thousand of your kind- as long as it is daytime and   you're   not behind him.."

-           Oh yes, Colonel. But   you see, now lynching   had become an entertainment. We lynch someone far away   and then   we watch on TV how a person dies. It makes our day. Also we    involve others.   A   chromium   creature, all legs,   breasts and teeth   comes out on   the screen and explains   how great it is   that our drone   shot at the Libyan convoy with the French missile and using British   guidance system. What a   cooperation! And we laugh, Colonel, we laugh like hysterical   bullies   at the suffering of others; we are drunk with blood, Colonel. I   am sincerely happy for   you   that you had only to deal with   ordinary   mobsters.

-             ".. The average man's a coward. In   the North he lets anybody   walk over him that wants to and goes home and prays fro a humble spirit to bear it."
