According to the foundation of our culture, the Holy Scriptures,
humankind started out leisurely, unobliged to clock in and out
of Paradise.
It's only when Adam and Eve wanted more that they got less. Was it less?
Where would we be if they'd stayed there and eaten what they were allowed to?
What would have happened if Eve had eaten of the Tree of Life instead
of the Tree of Knowledge?
She may have eaten the wrong apple.
In labor she was to have babies while Adam delved.
It took a while for the "gentlemen," the leisure class, to return,
but they did.
And these days the Garden embraces a few; the real estate market
in Beverly Hills is selling lots of homes that cost $20 million and
more.
The irony is that in the Old Testament, the richest man was also the wisest--Solomon. And he spent lavishly. He had it all. God gave wealthy Job a harder time.
Is it any coincidence that his name is spelled the same as "job"?
That's the crux desperationis (crucifix of desperation) of American
culture. Jobs. Those formerly with wealth are now wretched.
That's what the president will speak about this week.
There are many who said that when he first came into office he should
have addressed that problem instead of health care.
I said that one has to be healthy before one can work. I'll be the first to admit I was wrong. Health care did not lead to well-fare. We got neither.
But I'm sure anxious that all these jobless Jobs, so tested by God, will
go back to work soon.
