Long before dog Youtube videos, comedians were riffing about man's best friend.
Columnist Erma Bombeck used to cast dogs as the last of the optimists. They rush to the door when the bell rings she used to say but the visitor is never for them. They can't wait to go for a ride in the car but they never go anywhere except the vet who probably gives them a shot.
The late comic Garry Shandling took the observation a step further. The only thing a dog likes more than getting in the car is getting out of the car. If we opened both doors they'd tunnel through all day and be perfectly happy he said.
Woody Allen drew laughs when he remembering asking his mother where babies came from and she replied "Dogs"--thinking he said "rabies." Watch out!
Comedian Buddy Hackett recounted hearing the dog yawn at the edge of his bed while he and his wife were "involved." "Am I boring you," he says he asked the dog in jest. "A little," replied his wife. Hackett also observed that women were so polite that never passed gas--though they sat next to a lot of dogs who did.
Jay Leno told his audience there was a $12.99 video to test your dog's IQ. If you spend that much for the video, you know your dog is smarter than you.
Rodney Dangerfield used to say his dog was so lazy, instead of chasing cars he would just sit on the curb and take down license plate numbers.
And speaking of lazy, another comic was asked why he had a Beware of Dog sign when his pooch seemed past his prime and just slept all day. "People might trip over him" he said.
