You cannot solve a problem until you understand the problem you are actually facing.
Many Americans continue to respond to today's political crisis as though the institutions and assumptions that were once used to correct democratic failures remain fully intact. The first step toward solving any problem is recognizing when the nature of the problem itself has changed.
Good problem solving follows a sequence: define the problem, understand the new realities, avoid false solutions, recognize the constraints, develop a workable path forward, and commit to the long work of carrying out the solutions.
Defining the Problem.
Before discussing solutions, we need to identify the problem correctly. If we misdiagnose the problem, even well-intentioned efforts are likely to fail.
