Of all the many incompetents that inhabit this pathetic U.S. Congress, the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is at the head of the pack. What a spineless, pitiful political hack this man has proven to be. After four years of allowing the Republican obstructionists to use the filibuster to destroy the Democratic legislative agenda he, once again, is allowing the Republicans to take control. What a choke artist!
After he failed to take charge and institute filibuster reform, what did the Republicans do in return for his meek acquiescence to their dictates? When the very first opportunity presented itself, when the approval of the nomination of Chuck Hagel as President Obama's Secretary of Defense came up for vote, they immediately blocked it with a filibuster. Meek and mild Harry remains their punching bag and they now have him and the misnamed Democratic majority on the ropes, going down for the count.
What Harry Reid has allowed to happen is beyond comprehension. He let the despicable Republican sociopaths, the supposed minority party, once again take control of the Senate and dictate which legislation will be brought to a vote and which will not. I have no idea how an individual who calls himself a "leader" could be so very cowardly. This man has, once again, failed the American people and has guaranteed that this nation's most critical problems will continue to remain unaddressed.
Without a doubt, the responsibility for this political fiasco needs to be assigned to President Obama who should have made it clear to Reid and the Democratic members of the Senate that changing of the Senate rules on the use of the filibuster was mandatory, that it was critically important, and that they had a duty to change the Senate rules in order to effectively conduct the business of the nation. It's obvious that he failed to do that. When his involvement was urgently needed he was nowhere to be found.
And who will suffer for the monumental failings of Messrs. Reid and Obama? It will be the American people. A couple of days ago we heard Mr. Obama make his State of the Union speech in which he detailed a litany of important initiatives that this Congress needs to do to address and solve this nation's many problems. It was an inspirational speech intended to rally the Congress to do what is right for the American people and to get them to strongly support his agenda. He might as well have saved his breath because as the Republicans were listening, they were already plotting their strategy to use against him. They could hardly wait to use their favorite weapon, the filibuster that their good friend, Harry Reid, had preserved for them.
Doesn't this president know by now, that the Republicans that have sworn to destroy his presidency will use every weapon at their disposal to destroy his agenda? And since they still can wield the filibuster that his agenda can now be considered to be dead on arrival? Doesn't he realize that the Republicans are, in effect, well on the way to making the next few years of his presidency completely meaningless and irrelevant?
This latest collapse and capitulation by Reid will prove to be a monumental political disaster, a national catastrophe of the highest degree. Congress already has sunk so low in the opinion of the American people that you would think that it could not sink any lower; but it certainly has. This deplorable situation is a perfect illustration of my own low opinion of the U.S. Congress, as brought out in my recent article, entitled, "The Stench Emanating From the Washington Cesspool Has Become Unbearable, Overwhelming the Senses."
