Dear Friends,
Fukushima Daiichi, the nuclear plant wrecked by the earthquake/tsunami of March 2011, is out of control, and getting worse. The escalating groundwater radiation on the site increases the hazards for workers, as well as increasing the nuclear pollution of the Pacific every day. The problems are so many and so immense that TEPCO cannot keep up with them. The supply of workers is limited, and since a person can only tolerate so much exposure, has to be constantly renewed. Surely, it's time to face reality and direct the attention of the international community to this imminently life-threatening problem. Much worse that local wars or Ebola, Fukushima may well extinguish life in the next few years if a massive international effort is not begun at once.
The first petition addresses a situation that is vital to every country on the planet which plans to send athletes to the 2020 Olympics. How many Olympic athletes will be willing to risk their health to spend few weeks in Tokyo 5 years from now? If this petition gains momentum, the pressure on Japan to withdraw as Olympic host will force the international spotlight onto the ongoing Fukushima catastrophe.
The second petition addresses a UN resolution that is currently in the hands of the Philippine ambassador. It should be brought to the General Assembly floor and thoroughly discussed and voted on.

More than three years into the massive cleanup of Japan's tsunami-damaged nuclear power plant, only a tiny fraction of the workers are focused on key tasks such as preparing for the dismantling of the broken reactors and removing radioactive fuel rods. Instead, nearly all the workers at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant are devoted to an enormously distracting problem: a still-growing amount of contaminated water used to keep the damaged reactors from overheating. The amount has been swelled further by groundwater entering the reactor buildings...

The man in charge of cleaning up the wrecked Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has admitted there is little cause for optimism while thousands of workers continue their battle to contain huge quantities of radioactive water. The water problem is so severe that the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power [Tepco], and its myriad partner firms have enlisted almost all of their 6,000 workers in the 2tn yen ( 11bn) mission to bring it under control, almost four years after a deadly tsunami sparked a triple meltdown at the plant.
http://enenews.com/japanese-medical-experts-threatened-bad-radioactive-illnesses-really
Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education:: We have firsthand knowledge from at least a half dozen Japanese doctors who have said they have been threatened if they speak frankly to their patients about the health effects that they're experiencing; or if they frankly speak in public about their fears and, in fact, measurements of how bad radioactive illnesses really are. So we know of at least a half a dozen doctors who are being sat on, and if 6 are, you can be certain that many more are as well. It's a pressure that's being applied up and down the spectrum [You would now expect] exactly what we're seeing; earlier cancers and thyroid nodules. Then over the next 15 to 20 years, increased organ cancers as well as muscular cancers. The fact of the matter is, we're going to see cancers in that 4 to 30 year time span. And I still stand by what I've been saying now for 3 years. I think there will be a million extra cancers as a result of Fukushima Daiichi.

To People in the United States and around the world, I am so sorry for the uranium and plutonium which Japan has released into the environment. The fallout from Fukushima has already circled the world many times, reaching Hawaii, Alaska, and even New York. We live 60 km (37 miles) from the plant and our homes have been contaminated beyond levels seen at Chernobyl. The Cesium-137 they are finding in the soil will be here for another 30 years. But the government will not help us. They tell us to stay put. They tell our kids to put on masks and hats and keep going to school...

http://enenews.com/headline-fukushima-radiation-identified-northern-california-50-west-coast-samples-test-positive-7-bqm3-cesium-137-shore-expected-keep-rising-years-map The sample nearest to shore was taken about 100 miles off the coast of Eureka, in Northern California. Massive amounts of contaminated water were released from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. Radioactive water has continued to leak and be released from the complex. No state or federal agency is testing Pacific waters for radiation. [Ken Buesseler, a WHOI marine chemist] is looking for cesium-134, the so-called fingerprint of Fukushima.
http://www.fukuleaks.org/web/?p=14080 As news came out about yet another finding of Fukushima radioactive contamination offshore of North America, TEPCO published a rather bizarre press release....The corporate statement insists the contamination level raises no concern for human or animal health. This is a bit like taking healthy food advice from McDonalds. They go on to misrepresent statements made by Woods Hole for their own purposes including one twisted to try to claim cesium doesn't contaminate fish. This is obviously untrue.
