Don't Let Republicans Block one of Obama's Best Nominations

Dear Opednews editors:
The following email came with a request that it be forwarded as widely as possible, to obtain signatures for the linked petition. Please reprint. Thank you, Kathryn Smith ps may I also suggest that we readers all get word and publicity out there by writing letters to the editor.

Dear ,

Dawn Johnsen -- President Obama's nominee to head the vitally important Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) at the Justice Department -- is scheduled for a markup vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee this Thursday. Family Research Counsel and other Radical Right groups are generating thousands of calls and e-mails to Committee members in opposition ... so many that a party-line vote looks possible, with all Republicans opposing. If that happens, we could see a Republican filibuster of the nomination on the Senate floor!

We have less than 48 hours to counter the Right's grassroots -- e-mail your senator on the Senate Judiciary Committee now and urge him or her to support the confirmation of Dawn Johnsen.

We need thousands of contacts today and tomorrow so please forward this email to your friends.

This is the big one. So far, the Far Right has tried to obstruct confirmation of several of the president's DOJ nominees, but in the end they couldn't muster the support to block them in the Senate (thanks to your activism). But Dawn Johnsen is target #1 because of her strong commitment to the constitutional values we fight for and they want to undermine. She's been widely hailed for her commitment to civil liberties, privacy, women's rights and the Constitution -- no wonder the Right has it out for her.

As we've noted before, these DOJ nomination opposition efforts are proxy fights for future court battles (including the Supreme Court) and every Republican in the Senate has already signed a letter to the president threatening possible filibusters of judicial nominees.

If ever there were a crucial time to take the wind out of the Right's sails, it's right now.

Help get Dawn Johnsen confirmed. Take a moment to e-mail your senator on the Judiciary Committee.
