Sign outside a Washington D.C. restaurant requiring proof of vaccination for entry.
Let's call this a departure from the usual normally found in this space.
This morning I was in Washington D.C. visiting a friend with the intention of getting breakfast at one of our favorite restaurants.
When we arrived there was a sign on the entrance door that people entering were required to show their vaccination card in order to eat there.
Needless to say I don't carry my vaccination card; never before asked to show it. Even the airlines in the US-as far as I know-require a passenger to show his vac card.
Well I became irate to say the least saying to the maà ®tre de if they didn't let us in I would never again frequent this establishment again.
Although it didn't hit me immediately I later thought this governmental decree was clearly a case of discrimination. What about those people who choose not to be vaccinated? They are clearly being discriminated against?
What is the difference between black people who were refused to be served in restaurants during the Jim Crow era and the discrimination D.C. is doing now requiring people to show a vac card in order to sit and eat at a D.C. restaurant? Further what legal grounds was the D.C. government permitted to demand such an authoritarian measure?
Now I realize some reading this screed agree with the D.C. ruling. That's their prerogative.
