Did you trade your vote?

A question: I was at the Y today and everybody was buzzing about "trading votes." They say it's perfectly legal (because it's private, I guess) for someone in a "sure" state, like NJ, to trade votes with someone in a swing state. That is, a friend or relative in a swing state will vote for Hillary (where it counts) and the friend or relative here will vote for a minor contestant in New Jersey, where it doesn't matter. Is this being done?

My yoga instructor said her cousin in Pennsylvania intended to cast a protest vote for Jill Stein. My instructor will cast that vote for her in NJ and her cousin will cast the instructor's vote for Hillary in PA, where it's needed.

I can't quite get my head around it, but on a larger scale, couldn't such an effort correct the effects of gerrymandering? and maybe other problems in our system? And on the other hand, can it distort the picture of local voting that in some way expresses the will of the population?

Anybody heard of this?
