I want to respond to some recent Occupy Wall Street bashing.

Response to the claim that Occupy didn't accomplish anything
First, some people say that Occupy accomplished nothing. I have to hold myself back in response to that ignorant remark. The truth is that Bernie Sanders has a shot at becoming president because of the conversation on income inequality that Occupy forced to be on the table. Talking about the one percent and the 99% is on the table because of Occupy. Getting ideas out and widely discussed, as major issues, as memes, as campaign issues is a huge accomplishment-- massive, extraordinary, historical. So, if you're saying Occupy didn't do anything, you (words deleted three times, using my best self restraint) are wrong and you owe it to the amazing people who devoted stretches of their lives to occupy to start recognizing the huge service they did us.

Response to the leaderless aspect of Occupy
The future will not have leaders-- at least not top down, authoritarian leaders like we are accustomed to. There is a growing, almost burgeoning growth in development of new models of leadership that is far more bottom-up, horizontal, and egalitarianism enabling. Occupy made decisions, came up with policies, but they did it with a bottom-up approach. This was obvious to anyone who spent more time than strolling through an occupied area. The people who stayed there were incredibly dedicated, empowered people. Yes, some were stoners. So what. They were putting their lives on hold to take a stand and they upset the "system" enough so Obama ordered Homeland Security to break up Occupy.
I've done a lot of interviewing and writing on alternatives to top-down, authoritarian leadership. Check out my podcasts with Carne Ross, who wrote Leaderless Revolution, Brian Robertson, inventor of Holacracy, Steven Denning, Marina Sitrin, author of Horizontalism. And my article on PDA and Tim Carpente r also shows how bottom-up leadership is possible.
Even Zappos, a billion dollar subsidiary of Amazon.com, has shifted to using Holacracy, a leaderless, non-hierarchical approach to management.

Frankly, anyone who criticizes Occupy for lack of leadership needs to do their homework and learn more about what actually happened at Occupy and what is emerging in terms of new models of leadership.
As an advocate for the embrace of bottom-up, in all its manifestations, I am convinced that Occupy will be given a legacy in history that gives it credit for changing our idea of what leadership and democracy mean. Be careful with your glib rejection of the way occupy operated. It is not just wrong it is highly counterproductive. We need to be celebrating Occupy and the occupiers. We have the opportunity to affect the way history treats Occupy. Progressives should be grateful and acknowledging the incredible contribution of Occupy, so that it is seen as an example and inspiration-- an inspiration for more of the same-- innovative, world changing activism and protest.
Take a look at this video and see who you are sounding like when you bash occupy. It ain't pretty.
