Chicago Union Employees Receive Lay-off Notices Despite City Shut Down

The city of Chicago is experiencing lay-offs. This is due in part to the hard economic climate that our nation is facing. Most of the city of Chicago employees have already received lay-off notices despite Mayor Daley shutting the city down for six days, in efforts to close the city's $469 million dollar short fall.

The executive board of AFSCME Local 2912 would like to thank our members for their continued support to our Union and their service to the people of the City of Chicago.

We believe the loss of your expertise and skills will deprive the general public of vital services, and the union stands firmly behind you. We ask that you do not despair, for the fight is not over-it has merely just begun.

Chicagoans are truly tired of the way Mayor Daley is running the city.  His "I don't know" and "I'm not going to tell you" attitude serves no one but himself and hard working tax-payers are fed-up.

Even as the date of lay-offs fast approaches, the union will continue to fight for the hard working men and women who help make Chicago the great city that it is, and although we recently negotiated to obtain some city vacancies, we will continue to negotiate in good faith on your behalf.  In closing, we wish each and every member the best of luck in the coming years.

In Solidarity,
Leonard Casken
President AFSCME Local 2912
