Capricorn New Moon, December 27, 2008 (the 13th
New Moon of the year).
If you haven't noticed, Pluto is the star player this Solstice season. It was there to meet and greet the Sun on Winter Solstice, and it's part and parcel of the Capricorn New Moon. One reason we astrologers are watching this planet (yes! it's still a planet to me) so closely is that it hasn't traveled through the sign of Capricorn since 1762, leading up to the American Revolution. America has Pluto in Capricorn in its birth chart, which guarantees that our revolution is ongoing.
Remember, planets represent the archetypal energies of human consciousness. Pluto represents the energy of death and rebirth. It brings about both personal and collective transformation, for it fosters evolution, the instinctual urge to grow. It rules wealth, power and passion, and how we twist these energies to try to suit our petty ego goals. It has a lot to do with becoming aware of the Shadow and transforming it, and as we'll see in the next years, the Shadow Government that is really running the show.
The signs of the Zodiac represent different phases of life, different ways to grow. They represent elementary life processes, each with their own aims and strategies. They represent ways we human express ourselves as well as fundamental structures of collective life.
Capricorn represents the initiation of Dharma, which is an Indian term meaning righteous duty or the proper way to live according to higher law. Our Capricorn nature wants to find its true purpose in life. It is a test to 'live in the world but not of the world' as Jesus put it.
Since Capricorn rules governments, corporations and social structures, it has a collective purpose as well. It represents our collective will to responsibly manage our resources and societal structures. When we reach the initiation of Capricorn, we have to face and master the challenges of the material world, its limits (running out of oil?) and boundaries (Do we really advocate torture?), as well as our individual responsibility to our society and to our world.
Saturn rules Capricorn, and so we learn the laws of Karma in Capricorn: what we sow we will reap. If we have learned to be the 'author' of our own lives, if we have learned to act responsibly and maturely, if we stand in our integrity, we are learning the Capricorn lessons. With Pluto in Capricorn, it's time to grow up!
This season, Americans are resonating to this archetypal energy once again. After just a few months of Pluto moving into Capricorn, we've seen the veneer of respectability and responsibility being stripped from our financial systems and governmental structures. And we're just looking at the outer layers of decay! The size and scope of the greed and corruption is already overwhelming. Wait until we find out what these folks have really been up to! We have 16 more years as Pluto moves through Capricorn to peal back the layers of corruption and misuse of power so we can finally create the type of government that is truly of, by and for the people.
