Late yesterday Obama Supreme Court justice appointee Sonia Sotomayor granted a temporary exemption to a small group of nuns, so they would not have to provide contraceptives.
There's little further info on the story. The government has  until Friday to respond. Why would nuns need contraceptives anyway? If they have employees who do, why should they have the right to stop them.
What got me wondering is whether Sotomayor betrayed the supposedly liberal appointment she is so supposed to be and went with the Catholic side of her history. Do we have to worry that she could be for President Obama, and the people who supported her, what Justice David Souter was for George H.W. Bush-- someone who ended up not acting like expected?
I just don't get why nuns need to worry about providing contraceptives, except if they are trying to interfere with the lives  of women. And why would one of the few female justices grant an exemption that looks more like an effort to erode access to contraceptives. There are a collection of people like  David Green, the head of Hobby Lobby, who is fighting the contraceptive provision in Obamacare, saying people, "should not have to choose between violating their beliefs and violating the law." What a load of nonsense. People should not have the right to prevent others from having access to contraception. It's that simple.
Maybe I'm over-reacting. But this has me worried.
