"Whoo. That was scary," said Alice, sticking her trembling hands In her pockets as she walked out of the theater. "That Bulger guy was a real creep."

"You probably enjoyed it," muttered the White Rabbit, glancing at the Mad Hatter.

"Well, I have to admit that actor playing him did a terrific job," winked the Hatter. "Looked kind of familiar, too"" He cleared his throat. "But, no, I don't really fancy executions. As you know."

"As if." Alice snorted. "What I don't get is why the FBI supported him for so long. I mean--"

"Spoiler alert!" piped in the Hatter.

"I mean," sniffed Alice, "that both Connolly and Morris, and even their bosses, just looked the other way when it was clear that Bulger was a murdering sociopath. How could they do that?"

"You ask?" said the Rabbit. "Really?"

Alice and the Mad Hatter stopped and faced their friend.

"You don't see the analogy?"

"What's that?"

"Something that's similar or comparable," began the Hatter.

"I know," Alice rolled her eyes. "Go on, Bun, spill."

"Well, Connolly--and then Morris--and half the FBI there, bought the line that Bulger was doing bad things for a greater good. Getting rid of the evil Mafia empire. Maybe a few people had to die along the way, but the means justify the end, right?"

"Yes, in the beginning, but"" the Mad Hatter scratched under his hat.

"Soon, the Mafia is defeated. Connolly is a hero--doing great and feeling good. Sure, Bulger's group has grown super-powerful, and is wreaking havoc all over his world, chasing money, power, and control. Drugs, guns, invasions, death. But, if things are going well for you personally, denial is a wonderful way to avoid seeing the consequences of American imperialism--I mean Bulger's criminality.
