Henry T. Nicholas III, founder and CEO of Broadcom technology powerhouse is amidst daily struggles over a video recording of him using illicit drugs demonstrating the need for drug rehab in all echelons of existence. Nicholas, technology billionaire, is caught on video tape likely doing what millions of Americans do every day of their existence, using and abusing illegal drugs.
Though his legal battles must be fought and his situation aided by huge publicity and hindered by the same publicity, the fact remains that he undoubtedly suffers from addiction and needs to get help regaining the control over his life he so obviously lacks.
A classic case of the secret life of addiction leading to a very pubic example of the incapacitation brought on by addiction. Nicholas is facing possible sentences including prison terms, application of an “electronic leash” , probation and more as the courts decide how best to keep him “under control”.
But what is the cause of his not being in control; his addiction to drugs and alcohol. He has evidently relinquished control of his life to drugs and alcohol at sometime in the past and is currently transferring part of that control to the legal system.
Though it is a travesty to see someone as bright and able as Nicholas giving up the control of a driven life to drugs and alcohol, it is not an uncommon occurrence. 20 to 30 million Americans use and abuse illegal drugs and alcohol every day. Many of these individuals desperately need addiction treatment facilities to help them regain the control over their life they have unintentionally given to these substances. Husbands, wives, daughters and sons; people from every race, creed and religion find themselves in Mr. Nicholas’s circumstances currently, though with slightly less international scrutiny.
