President Barack Obama during a press conference at the White House

We spy on you every which way technologically possible, intercept all your electronic communications from phone to the internet, of individuals, to "back doors" in software sold to businesses even to the personal cell phone of your head of state, but now we give "assurances" that in the future "her conversations will be safe". [i]

That's what we know the Obama administration has told German officials regarding the NSA's monitoring of Chancellor Angela Merkel's personal cell phone conversations.

More concretely, the head of Germany's largest telecommunications company, Deutsche Telekom "told a cybersecurity conference in Germany on Monday that his company is working to keep electronic message traffic from 'unnecessarily' crossing the Atlantic" where it could be intercepted by the NSA.

Mr. "old reliable", NSA Director Keith Alexander in a recent interview before the Merkel revelations came to light said, "What's more important? Partnering with countries may be more important than collecting on them", his reference to "protecting against cyberthreats to the computer networks of the world's largest companies".

Maybe Alexander was anticipating the flap of Merkel's cell phone conversations being monitored and attempted to head off and deflect the all but certain uproar and her indignation once it became public. But hardly to any avail.

In the past week, Senator John McCain R. AZ jumped into the fray saying, "There should be a whole housecleaning" of the American intelligence community and Alexander "should resign or be fired".
