Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland
Are the neo-con crazies in charge in Washington?
One would think with the debacle they created with the invasion and occupation of Iraq they'd have been whisked off stage and relegated to the dustbin of history as the false prophets they proved out to be.
But not this crowd; they're still part of the government, in think tanks strewn all over downtown Washington as well as talking head favorites of the corporate media.
Now with Ukraine dominating the headlines there's an eerie drumbeat (Iraq?)from the US media whipping up hysteria demonizing and blaming Russia's Vladimir Putin for creating the destabilization in Ukraine. Are they preparing the nation for a war with Russia with Ukraine providing the pretext to that end?
As to the idea of war with Russia any sane person would say, "No way!"
But the neo-cons don't represent sanity. They're hard core ideologues with delusions of US supremacy everywhere in the world and ready to use the military to that end.
Now ensconced in the US State Department is non other than Victoria "F_ck the EU" Newland, the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs who boasted giving Ukraine $5 billion since 1991 to support "democracy", then supported the violent coup of Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych and then hand picked Arseniy Yatsyenyuk as the new unelected prime minister of the post coup regime in Kiev. Newland is married to prominent neo-con Robert Kagan, a co-founder of the 1997 "Project for the New American Century (PNAC), the neo-con plan for the US to initiate regime change anywhere in the world. Kagan was a foreign policy advisor to Hilary Clinton in her stint as Secretary of State.
So with Newland the "driver" behind the coup of Yanukovych in February, Washington's outcry over Crimea voting in a referendum to join the Russian Federation, depicting Russian troops legally conducting exercises on its side of the border as ready to invade eastern Ukraine, the deployment of Right Sector neo-Nazi's as part of Ukraine's new "National Guard" sent to the east to put down the "terrorists" seizing and occupying government buildings in cities and towns in eastern Ukraine-but really just indigenous ethnic Russian speaking Ukrainians that oppose the post coup government in Kiev, the recent killing of unarmed protesters manning barricades in Slavyansk , allegedly perpetrated by Right Sector thugs who shot and killed the men as they approached, all this after the not so secret visit of CIA Director John Brennan "meeting" with the Ukrainian coup leaders followed days later with Vice President Biden also "conferring" with them as well while denouncing Putin certainly adds to the suspicion Washington is pulling the strings of the puppets they helped install in Kiev.
Yesterday in response to the killings in Slavyansk Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned Russia would stand by idly if the post coup government slaughters Russian speaking people in eastern Ukraine.
Add to this mix of volatility are the planned military maneuvers in western Poland and then in the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, the recent deployment of a US Navy cruiser into the Black Sea and NATO fighter jets scrambling to intercept a Russian surveillance plane in some "cold war" type aerial standoff in the same area of the Black Sea. Such accidents or perceived provocations could easily produce an incident leading to open warfare.
What's been a critical factor since 1945 with the advent and use of nuclear weapons is no nuclear weapons power has ever attacked another nuclear power, even with conventional weapons thus avoiding a nuclear conflagration-with exception of India and Pakistan in their conventional wars over Kashmir.
Up to now, attaining nuclear weapons have proved to be the ultimate deterrent against being attacked by another nuclear weapons power.
The US invasion of Iraq in 2003 was not lost on the North Korean's who hastily acquired its own nuclear weapons capability to deter any attack.
Iran doesn't have nuclear weapons but could easily acquire that capability as a means of last resort particularly if the ongoing talks with the P5+1 break down and the crippling sanctions against it are not permanently lifted.
