Typical U.S. Navy guided missile cruiser in operation today.
We now learn on December 5 the American naval cruiser "Cowpens" had to avoid a Chinese ship that had cut across its bow in the South China Sea.
From reports, [i] the Cowpens, a missile carrying cruiser was "observing" the Chinese aircraft carrier "Liaoning" making its first voyage into the South China Sea when a Chinese vessel accompanying the carrier advanced toward the Cowpens, crossed its bow within 200 yards causing the cruiser to maneuver and avoid a collision.
American defense officials called the Chinese action "particularly aggressive" stating "Our cruiser was operating in international waters of the South China Sea, not close into the coast and in the general vicinity of the aircraft carrier". China responded the American military "peering into Chinese waters is a practice treating China as an enemy". The Americans reply "the lack of Chinese transparency impels America to do its reconnaissance".
Isn't it amazing the truth emanates from the so called dictatorial totalitarian state and mere bloviating comes from the supposed free democratic state.
Let's take a look at the larger picture.
The American navy pretty much operates with impunity in every body of water connected to the open sea. It's the only nation that does; acts depicting America's attempt to exercise hegemony all over the world.
Think about it; what country could deter this exercise of power on the open seas? None of course.
But lately their have been "incidents" besides the recent near naval collision. One week earlier America sent two B-52 bombers over airspace China claimed was its territory in the East China Sea two days after China made the announcement with the Americans saying they won't abide by China's claim of territorial sovereignty. Many nations make such claims adjacent to their countries land mass so this not something unique to China.
There have been other close encounters with the Iranian navy by the huge American naval presence in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Iran.
