An Apology

So, wow, was I wrong.

After carrying Dennis Kucinich's entire presentation of his resolution to impeach George W. Bush (a resolution containing 35 articles of impeachment) last night, a reading into the Congressional Record that took nearly four hours, I sarcastically suggested that media in all its glorious and perverted forms would ignore this historic document today. No coverage, I predicted. No media storm, I allowed. Nobody in our dear media establishment gives a crap, I grumbled.

And, I included the so-called liberal media outlets, that handful of radio and television talk show hosts who identify themselves as not just progressive, but also dedicated to the removal and eventual trial of Bush, Cheney and their operatives and subordinates for crimes against the U.S.and crimes against humanity. Watch and listen I suggested. The silence will be deafening; the coverage on right-wing radio and television will be derisive, ugly, mocking. They'll gut Kucinich and resurrect his comments from last year about having seen a UFO.

Wow, was I wrong, right?

This morning it was all over the front pages of those two Newspapers Of Record, The New York Times and The Washington Post. News stories. Opinion pieces. Timelines of the crimes committed by these corrupt Bush Administration bastards. Editorial calls - demands, actually - for the resignation of both Bush and Cheney. USAToday had a 36-point cap headline reading, BUSH, GO! The front page of the New York Daily News screamed, GET OUTTA TOWN, THUGS!

And the TV coverage! Good Morning America, the Today Show, whatever is on CBS and even the androids on Fox, not to mention the graphic-loaded CNN American Morning, drilled their audiences wide awake with the good - no, the wondrous - news that at long last someone (My God! A member of Congress!) was making the effort laid forth and insisted upon in the U.S. Constitution to end the most corrupt presidency in our young Republic's history!

And, so it went all day long. News coverage. Updates. Scenes of confusion in the White House. Press conferences by Democratic members of the House promising impeachment hearings would begin tomorrow, Thursday at the latest. Republican Senators and Representatives caught on camera slinking down dark hallways, underground garages, musty cloakrooms, trying to escape the coming wrath of the people of the United States as delivered by their elected surrogates.

Ah, it was glorious. For the first time in my life I was proud, proud I tell you, to be an American. Justice would prevail. The nation would adhere to its founding document. Honor would be restored. The global community would realize we were emerging from a nearly eight year long descent in to political chaos and fascism.

I went outside and, for the first time in decades, placed in the rusty bracket on my front porch a wrinkled, musty, faded, yet still powerful symbol of my personal dedication to truth, justice and, yes, the American Way, the old flag passed down through my family for three generations; the Stars and Stripes.

Then I stood on the sidewalk and saluted it.
