Some old habits never die in the South. On Wednesday, Alabama Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead posted an opinion piece on the state GOP's official website that's sure to make more than one Dixie Bell grab her pearls -- He claims that America risks 'incurring God's wrath' if it allows for gay marriage.

Armistead loudly proclaims: "God is not one to be mocked, and I fear for our state and our country when we go against God's word."

He then goes on to quote Genesis: "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."

We can take note not only of the Alabama Republican Party's own Chairman having tacitly alluded to what would appear to be an endorsement of a religion-based governance in which laws would be effective extensions of God's word and testament and that's just for starters.

In his column titled "In Alabama: We Dare Defend our Rights," he continues: "So, how is it that God's truth can be turned on its head as the debate now rages in Alabama regarding the meaning of marriage? The answer is that we, as a society, have become our own god. We have made God in our image. But, God will not be mocked. The State of Alabama and the United States of America will reap God's wrath if we embrace and condone things that are abhorrent to God, such as redefining marriage as anything other than a union between one man and one woman."

The only question remaining is perhaps why social conservatives seem to consistently rinse and repeat the same philosophies decade after decade without many mainstream media outlets or non-partisan sources of information taking note of it and calling it for what it truly is -- An endorsement of Theocracy in the United States.

Now, one could read dozens of books on America's founding and remark at the underlying irony of so-called 'founding principles" types calling for religious beliefs in government when the very nation was founded by immigrants fleeing religious persecution, we could even ask if he would enforce a law stating that freshwater and saltwater could never mix, right? After all, we're talking about making public laws based on private religious beliefs, right? Although, he and his followers may be somewhat less interested in non-Christian, specifically non-protestant religiously inspired laws so see yourself out to any Muslims following Quranic doctrine on water restrictions.
