The siege of Misrata by Gaddafi forces is not over, but it is seriously waning as his army surrounding Misrata, pounded by NATO from the air and counterattacked relentlessly, street by street by much better motivated rebel freedom-fighters, has been forced into retreat from even Misrata's airport now, as you can see in this battle map dated May 20th.

About all the regime can do now is shell and rocket the city from long range and launch incursions into rebel-held territory.

Meanwhile, it is instructive to see what destruction Gaddafi has mercilessly wrought on one of his own major cities and seaports, shattering the lives of tens of thousands of people, leaving many of them crippled or dead, all in a vain attempt to cling to yet another decade of despotic power over them as the needs of his egomania would dictate.

From al Jazeera, video footage of the scale of destruction and weaponry used amongst and against a civilian population, clear crimes in the definitions of the Nuremberg Principles and Geneva Conventions, which prohibit sieges of populated cities, particularly sieges that deliberately seek to starve and brutalize said population into submission:

Here, also, are several of CNN photographer Ben Wedeman's photos of the carnage in Misrata that he posted through Twitter and then subsequently posted HERE at the Libya February 17 website:

Photos of Misrata by CNN's Ben Wedeman

CNN reporter Ben Wedeman is in Misrata, and via twitter he shared the following images:

"Treating wounded at Hikma hospital's intensive care unit in Misrata. 5 to be evacuated to soon."--

"Destruction on Tripoli Street, Misrata."

"Libyan army tank that was hidden in vegetable market, hit by NATO aircraft in Misrata."--
