"You know what they do in San
Francisco, some in the gay community there they want to get people so if they
got the stuff they'll have a ring, you shake hands, and the ring's got a little
thing where you cut your finger. Really. It's that kind of vicious stuff, which
would be the equivalent of murder.
You sometimes wonder what 700
Club co-host Terry Meeuwsen
is thinking when she's sitting with Pat Robertson and listening to his latest
inanity. Cenk Uygur of The
Young Turks has called
Robertson "cray", meaning (possibly) someone who is or says crazy and
provocative things but no one really knows why (see below). Ms. Meeuwsen, a
former Miss America, always sits through "cray" Robertson, questions
meekly, then becomes meeuwt (sorry) accepting all the
"cray" as gospel. She's actually very savvy in keeping her job.
So we'll probably never know what Meeuwsen's response of "really?!" meant to Robertson's latest anti-gay comment about AIDS handshake rings.
Yes, AIDS handshake
rings. You know, those things that surfaced in Robertson's mind yesterday and
now are hoarding the internet headlines. Those things that were part of Pat's
rambling on about AIDS in response to an almost unrelated question from a shill.
Those things that were edited out of the program and clips excised from
YouTube. Those things that have elicited WTF?s from millions.
Which have elicited an
oblique "apology" from Robertson:
"In my own experience, our organization sponsored a meeting years ago in San
Francisco where trained security officers warned me about shaking hands
because, in those days, certain AIDS-infected activists were deliberately
trying to infect people like me by virtue of rings which would cut fingers and
transfer blood.
I regret that my remarks had been misunderstood, but this often happens because
people do not listen to the context of remarks which are being said. In no wise
were my remarks meant as an indictment of the homosexual community or, for that
fact, to those infected with this dreadful disease."
The "trained security officer" may have been Jerry Falwell who was
standing guard against Tinkie Winkie.
A Generation Lost - For Good
The Cenk Uygur clip is really worth watching, not for the fact that it is one of the few imbeds of Robertson's statement, but for the response it gets from The Young Turks: Robertson is a "guilty pleasure" and a "dying breed." Que the second thought: Robertson and his kind are finally on the way out. With a laugh. With a WTF? With all the dismissive responses they should have gotten long ago.
And along with AIDS handshake rings, these lies should go the laugh/WTF way as well:
