Evolution may have more than one paradigm. Yes, it serves stronger and craftier and it serves more nurturing, bonding, communicating and sharing. It does both. And sometimes that dialectic expressing as one species falls apart and both of these things begin to exhibit on a new rung of the evolutionary ladder in a new species. Born into new manifestation might be life forms more unified and differentiated both. Might we get a new species that is far more different than any species so far and more integrated within itself? And that integration might be born of deep tolerance of many kinds of humans and many kinds of beliefs all seen as different manifestations of one global family.

Hegel and Ken Wilber both talk of evolution splitting things and bringing them together later for a fusion on a higher level.

The Neo-Darwinist Steven Jay Gould tells us that an equilibrium of some sort is crashed and that time line finds its end and we get a "punctuated equilibrium". Whatever the dual-sided manifestation was that characterized that species must now differentiate and fall apart and reunite on a higher rung of the evolutionary ladder or go extinct. And it is not a slow progression but an inner cooperative magical kind of thing, not based so much on slow careful guarding of the old, with tooth and claw and war weapon, but rather a sudden inner punctuating new beginning, cooperative in the extreme. Only after it is birthed can it fight outwardly for continued existence. But birthing is not a matter of competitive anything.

Had Darwin ever seen what human society did with his innocent little theory and all the harm it causes as "Social Darwinism" he would have been mortified. Survival of the fittest may in the long run mean the most cooperative as opposed to the most competitive.

The dinosaurs and all previous creatures never had a live birth or a long nurturing period for the young. Only mammals do that and only human animals take care of their offspring for a really long time and further only humans will give their lives to insure that their offspring, genetic and extra-genetic-cultural, are both taken care of from generation to generation.

That incredible human trait is mostly a matter of immense cooperation between humans to make it possible. It is a matter of nurturing two kinds of "young".

I am a hippy that never dropped out. I have held on to impossible idealism and will not give up. I think the human race is a ticking time bomb and we are at the last tick. So what is the good of slow careful pragmatism that allows time for it all to (more...)
