|Headlines and broadcasters on Wednesday morning, including this one from USA Today , insist that 'half of new COVID-19 cases are in just five states,' implying that the nation is really cooling down except for a literal handful of hot spots. This is a huge distortion of the actual situation, and genuinely dangerous false presentation. For one thing, it's not 'half.' Adding together New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey gets 44% of the cases over the past seven days. However, there's no sudden cliff between those states and the rest of the nation. In fact, Texas reported more cases than New Jersey on Tuesday by a wide margin, and a number of states have shuffled their positions over the past seven days.
