Copyrighted Image? DMCA | An investigation released by the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting last week revealed that Maine is violating its own laws by skipping regularly scheduled state-mandated inspections of nearly 100 hazardous dams.
Of these, 24 have been classified by the state as having "high-hazard potential," meaning that mis-operation or failure could cause loss of life. The remaining are "significant hazard dams," meaning that failure could cause property or environmental damage. Records provided to the Maine Center by the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) said that many of these dams are two to seven years overdue for state-mandated inspection. |
