"Scott Pruitt, a Trump-appointee with close ties to polluting industries, the EPA is gutting environmental regulations with the explicit intent of maximizing fossil fuel production. He wants to allow fracking waste in the Gulf without understanding its impact. Pruitt sued the EPA a dozen times when he was attorney general of Oklahoma, where unlimited fracking is blamed for extraordinary earthquakes in the state, and now, he wants a 'discharge permit' for offshore drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, to allow operators to dump drilling wastewater which contain fracking chemicals-- drilling fluids and pollutants, such as heavy metals -- directly into the Gulf. Pruitt has released a proposal for rescinding the Clean Water Rule, which would leave federal regulators with the same definition of protected waters that has been in place since the late 1980s. It's the first step."
