THE PLOY TO END PUBLIC SCHOOLS in No.Carolina : The legislature failed to fund the schools adequately & spends 12.2% less perpupil than it did prior to the recession, ranking 39th in the nation. Legislators removed the cap on charter schools, 173 of which add substantial fiscal pressure to cash-starved districts. The Tea Party dominated legislature cut funds to schools and teachers, but  cut taxes for corporations & expanding charter schools. A bungled class size reduction leaves schools with unfunded capital needs & 7,000  teaching positions to fill. We’ve lost 7,500 teacher assistants crippling teachers’ abilities to differentiate instruction. Teachers  lost due process rights, longevity pay, and pay increases for graduate degrees. Health insurance premiums have skyrocketed.  Teachers responsible for insuring their families now pay an average of nearly $10,000 a year.
