"What concerns me most when I look at America today isn’t that it’s having a textbook authoritarian collapse — stagnation, nationalism, proto-fascism, scapegoating, demonization, abuse of power, cheering masses, check, check check — but how impoverished the American understanding is of it (thanks, mostly, I suppose, to a class of intellectuals who appear to not want to understand anything how authoritarianism really works, still foolishly thinking themselves above it, but I digress). The narrative seems to go like this: we’ll have an election soon, and then we’ll undo the bad things. Ah, but is it really that simple?"
