HBCU Hampton Univ. students arrived to the polls in school shuttles, arriving hourly starting at 9 a.m. Barbara Shipley, chief of the precinct, said that despite the 12-2 p.m. break in busing, they still could not clear the line. “Honestly we had no concept of what the day was going to be because there were so many early voters,” Shipley said. “This is a great turnout, we’re excited to see them all and we’re working the lines as fast as we can.” Students were filling out their paperwork in line, which for some took almost 3 hours. This is Shipley’s 3rd presidential election as a poll official and 9th election overall, she said she’s never seen anything like what she saw today. VA Dept of Elections Comm Susan Beals cited reports of long lines at college campuses across the state, with students being encouraged to use same-day registration and cast provisional ballots.
