Like so many other self-aggrandizing myths of the United States, freedom of the press is more of an illusion than a guaranteed right. Despite our First Amendment, much vaunted by jingoistic shills for "American exceptionalism," the United States only rates 41st out of 180 nations in press freedoms, according to a 2016 analysis by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). That puts countries such as Estonia, Cyprus, Belize and Finland ahead of the US. The report cites several factors in the 2016 US ranking.
