"I want to give a more balanced view of the history of Russian-American relations," Professor Urbanovich said. "From the beginning of this country, Russian-American relations were remarkably good, on the whole, right up until 1917 and the Bolshevik takeover.  "By the way, Thomas Jefferson mentioned in one of his letters that Russia was a most friendly nation to the U.S.."

This closeness is one of the things that surprised second-year student Jessica Stanfield, of Chincoteague, a foreign affairs and Spanish major who took the class because she did not know a lot of the history between Russia and the U.S. She was surprised by how much the two cooperated before the Russian Revolution.  "It's been a very intense week," she said. "I've learned that there is a lot I don't know. This will help me with understanding the world - and now there are several more things I want to learn."
