Palm Beach County, the third most populous county in Florida, has created a workaround to SB 7066, a law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in June. It prevents returning citizens from registering to vote until they repay financial obligations imposed as part of a sentence. GOP lawmakers wrote the law months after citizens voted to change their constitution to end a lifetime ban on voting for many returning citizens.
Moving forward, people convicted of felonies in Palm Beach County will still be required to repay financial obligations, but they won't be part of the sentencing documents. This will let them register and vote.
Also, returning citizens sentenced before this change happened can file an "agreed upon motion" with the public defender's office in order to retroactively change their individual sentence docket, according to WFTL Radio.
This occurs as President Trump seeks reelection.
