Israel's violent actions "go against every human rights principle," says Democrat Mal Hyman, who is again running for US Congress in the conservative state of South Carolina. Hyman has not silenced himself on Palestinian rights in the past few weeks, but rather has been outspoken in voicing his alarm about Israel’s actions in Gaza. On 3 April he tweeted that Israel’s military had carried out “a massacre” the previous Friday when it shot and killed Palestinian demonstrators participating in the Great March of Return. Hyman describes himself as “a Jewish man and an activist who has done human rights work in the West Bank and Gaza three different times.” If other progressive candidates employ such language regarding Palestinian rights in the run-up to the elections it will be a watershed moment in the Democratic Party.
