South Korean officials on Wednesday said they were checking whether a tremor emanating from near the main nuclear test site in North Korea was triggered by an atomic detonation. Seismologic centers in China, Europe and the United States all reported a tremor of magnitude 4.9 to 5.2. Officials at the Korea Meteorological Administration in Seoul reported a magnitude 4.2 tremor and said that the tremor pattern looked “artificial,” not likely to have resulted from a natural earthquake. “We are checking whether this is indeed a nuclear test or something else,” said a spokesman for the South’s Defense Ministry, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity.
