While observing Kazakhstan with Google Earth, economist Dmitriy Dey made a surprising discovery: enormous geometric earthworks visible only from the air. NASA has released satellite images of the formations, which has been the biggest indication that the government agency is interested in investigating them further, reports The New York Times. Dey discovered the geoglyphs in 2007 after watching a television program on the pyramids, mummies and tombs of Egypt. He was curious if Kazakhstan had pyramids and came across the earthworks during his Google Earth search. Known as the Steppe Geoglyphs, there are at least 260 intricate figures of crosses, rings, lines and squares created out of mounds, trenches and ramparts. They encompass an area the size of several football fields, with the oldest estimated to date back 8,000 years.
