Medical Violence

Granted that doctors must do things that are painful and sometimes harmful to the patients they are trying to help.  

But does the culture of American medicine lead to more violence than is necessary?  And is the existence of this violence, necessary or not, corrosive to the humanity of both doctor and patient, and to the trust that is so important to the healing process?
