The U.S. healthcare system has become "an expensive, impersonal system that is not serving the best interests of either the nation or the people it purports to heal," according to Dr. Henry Buchwald, a revered doctor, surgeon, teacher, healthcare pioneer and patient advocate. While there have been many changes over the last 50 years and some progress with our nation's healthcare, Dr. Buchwald, Professor Emeritus of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, explains that the system has moved away from prioritizing patient care and instead focuses on the interests of healthcare providers and insurance companies.
