In March, the leadership of the Fifth Service of the FSB, Russia’s main intelligence service, were reportedly placed under house arrest. The FSB has been in charge of providing Putin with intelligence on political developments in Ukraine up to and on the eve of the invasion. Sergey Beseda, head of the FSB’s foreign intelligence branch, has been arrested along with his deputy Anatoly Bolyukh. Beseda is charged with embezzling $5 billion, money which was supposed to pay for subversion inside Ukraine. Is this why Putin expected no resistance?
