George Lakey: My favorite metaphor is a blacksmith’s forge: polarization heats up society, making it malleable. Failing economic security shakes people up, creating an opening for new and bolder approaches. Government has lost confidence of our young people. They're open to new leadership. And some of the old prejudices, racism and sexism that used to keep people apart are losing their grip.
